THE PROCESS
Every commission is different, but they all begin with a getting to know you chat. This is my opportunity to learn more about you or your intended recipient, and understand the ideas behind your piece. If you have heirlooms you would like to rework, bring them along to this chat either in person or you can message me images of what you have.
I usually start to have ideas during this chat and will ask you lots of questions to help shape my design proposals! This initial consultation can take place in person, at your home, over the phone or via video chat.
With mood boards and initial sketches, we will start exploring your design. Even when you don’t like an idea, that can be as helpful as liking it and we can fine tune the final design even more.
Once the final design is selected I create a gouache rendering. This process is centuries old, and gives us versatility to either move directly to the making stage with a goldsmith, who can craft directly from the painting (a little like an architect draft) or we move to CAD (computer aided design) to create a 3D rendering and resin models, if desired. You will also receive a full quote at this stage.
With a final design in hand, and a 50% deposit, its time to get making! I work with only the very best crafts people to make my designs, so that I can confidently give you a lifetimes warranty. The longevity of my pieces is paramount so we are conscious not to hollow out pieces to reduce metal costs or use low quality gemstones or diamonds. In the jewellery world, if you are paying less you are usually getting less, so although my prices might be higher than what you pay on the high street, they come with an intimate understanding of your piece and a personal interest to ensure they never go wrong.
Without a doubt the reveal is the best part of the process. Much like the initial consultation, this part in the process can take place at my studio, at your home, or, my favourite, at a lovely cafe! Sometimes I refer to this first look as a ‘fitting appointment’ as there may need to a few final tweaks to optimise the fit of a piece.
Seeing gemstones transformed into dazzling new heirlooms always brings a smile to my face, especially when it suits my client so well.
